Catching The Rain
10 years ago, when the Cape Grim Water Company started it purchased 300 hecteres of land at Cape Grim, under the guidance of Australian Government's Scientific and Research Organization, the CSIRO. The land was chosen so it would be far enough from potential air bound contaminates such as crop spraying and heavy sea salts, yet close enough to the sea to catch the pristine rains. The Antaractic's Baseline Air Pollution Station is at Cape Grim and it does an air purity reading every 30 seconds. Engineers tailor designed and produced a series of large Food Quality, odorless panels that have the capability of being automatically cleaned. Each panel has the capability of collecting 6 million litres of water. The water is straight away transfer through a filter into air free 30,000 Litre tanks. From this point on the water never comes in contact with air again until it goes into the bottler, and then it is sterile air. Because Cape Grim's supply is limited, it rains on average only 187 days a year, bulk storage is critical to meet supply.
