Ireland is an island with 32 counties, six of which are part of Northern Ireland, and Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom. Ireland and its component states have been known by many different names, including the Irish Free State, Eire, and the Republic of Ireland. Early Irish History began around 10,000 B.C. when hunters crossed the land bridge from Scotland into Ireland.
Throughout the history of Ireland, different groups have invaded and occupied Ireland but none have affected the Irish more than the British. The British first arrived in late 1160s when England was under the rule of Henry II, and initially Britain only controlled a small part of Ireland around Dublin. From the late 1160s to the early 1800s, England expanded its control and influence in Ireland, suppressing numerous revolts and persecuting the Catholic population. The Act of Union of 1800 made Ireland part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
