Junk Science & Water Quackery: SuperNariwa

According to the creators of the product, SuperNariwa is a concentrated and magnetically energized water that comes from a spring of Japan's Magnetic Mountain which has been created by a meteorite shower and a sea volcano eruption millions of years ago. According to the website, SuperNariwa is supposed to help the body resist disease and slow aging by:

Increasing intracellular hydration, replacing the depletion of essential minerals, stabilizing and protecting cells, h elping to maintain normal blood flow and pH, f lushing out wastes, and preventing their accumulation in cells and e liminating harmful free radicals. The SuperNariwa concentrated, energized formula is claimed to deeply nourish and rejuvenate every cell in your body and help you feel more energy, increased vitality and joy in life.

All his good stuff  for only $99.95 per 10ml bottle. This makes SuperNariwa the most expensive bottled water we are aware of at a price of $ 9995 per liter!

Unfortunately the claims made by SuperNariwa do seriously conflict with scientific reality and have to be put squarely in the water quackery category.

A substance is magnetized when its constituent molecules or structural elements can be aligned in a definite direction by the influence of an external magnetic field. In a liquid or in a gas, this can only happen to molecules that possess an odd number of electrons. Water, H2O, contains 10 electrons, so it is not attracted to or oriented by a magnet. In fact water, like most molecules, is diamagnetic; it is actually repelled by a magnet, although so weakly that sensitive instruments are needed to observe this effect.

And contrary to what you may read, the properties of water (surface tension, density, internal structure, chemical or biological behavior) are not measurably altered by treatment with a magnet.

To a chemist, "magnetized water" is laughable nonsense, but to a number of companies, it is a bonanza— a wonderful opportunity to extract revenue from the notoriously science-challenged "alternative health" crowd.

These waters are supposed to work all kinds of wonders from tuning up your immune system to raising your "energy levels", introducing anti-oxidants and slowing the ageing process. Many of the claims are identical with those made by other products such as ionized water and "clustered" waters. — and given the strong influence of mind on body (the placebo effect), it sometimes appears to work- for a while, at least!

Matching Bottled Water With Food
The FineWaters Balance categorizes the "mouthfeel" of water based on the level of carbonization in five steps from Still to Effervescent, Light, Classic and Bold. This categorization is the basis of matching water with food in a fine dinig experience.
The Water Glass
When one orders water in a fine dining restaurant it becomes rapidly clear that water is, in most cases, an afterthought. We have been served water in all possible contraptions from heavy whiskey tumblers to long highball glasses and the dreaded lemonade glass. A wide variety of wine glasses are also often used as water glasses. This is not appropriate.
The Flavor of Bottled Water
When tasting water the most important factor in its overall integrated sensation we call flavor is the mouthfeel generated by the size, amount and distribution of the bubbles or the absence of it.
