Osteoporosis currently affects more than 75 million people in the United
States, Europe and Japan. To protect the bones and prevent the onset of
osteoporosis, calcium is a key element, yet studies have shown that 75% of
Americans do not get enough of this vital nutrient.
In an effort to reduce this trend, leading doctors across the country are
turning to alternative therapies, among them a recommendation to drink Calcium
rich mineral water.
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body, a man weighing 150
pounds contains approximately 3 pounds, 12 ounces of calcium in his body.
Calcium is one of the first elements in the body to go out of balance when the
diet is inadequate.
Calcium is used in forming bones, also known as bone mineralization, and in
the proper formation and maintenance of teeth. It is also important in
nerve impulse transmission, blood coagulation, and muscle contraction.
Vitamin D (sunshine) and magnesium are essential to the proper absorption and
assimilation of calcium.
Calcium is required for the release of energy for muscular contraction.
mediates the transport function of cell and organelle membranes, effects the
release of neurotransmitters at synaptic junctions, mediates the synthesis,
secretion and metabolic effects of hormones and enzymes.
Calcium also helps regulate muscle tone, muscle receptiveness to nerve
stimulation and the regulation of the heart beat. Calcium is an alkaline
positive mineral that has a powerful attraction to oxygen.
Everyone knows that women need to fend off osteoporosis as they age. But what
is less well-known is that 30 percent of elderly men who suffer a hip fracture
will die within a year of that fracture -- double the rate for older female
patients.
But despite this increased risk, experts say many men view brittle bones as a
"woman's problem."
Too many doctors may also share that view: One recent U.S. study, published
in the June issue of the journal Osteoporosis International, "validated what we
thought -- that men who have fractures are woefully undertreated. Just one in
every six men who had a spine or hip fracture was treated with osteoporosis
medications" to strengthen ailing bones, said Dr. Thomas J. Weber, an assistant
professor of medicine at Duke University Medical Center.
Calcium until recently, has only been available in a compound if it is not
derived from the diet. Compounds require enzyme functions to break the
molecules apart so that the body may use the single molecule of calcium, the
building blocks of the body.
Calcium rich Mineral Water is made of pure 99.8 pure calcium in water soluble
form that is readily available for assimilation by the human body. Calcium
also heightens pH in the body, making it more alkaline thereby enhancing the
immune responses as virus's and bacterium die in an alkaline environment.
"This is a benefit not just for older individuals with osteoporosis but for
many teenagers, and those in their twenties where it is crucial to achieve peak
bone mass," says Dr. Andrew J. Laster, MD, FACR, of the Arthritis &
Osteoporosis Consultants of the Carolinas.
"Osteoporosis currently has a mortality rate equivalent to breast cancer,"
says Dr. Joseph Lane, Chief of Osteoporosis Prevention at Cornell's Hospital for
Special Surgery in New York City. Yet, Dr. Lane says, "Osteoporosis is a
preventable disease."
