LISBON (AFP) - Bottled water that is said to help induce weight loss by making those who
drink it feel full, will go on sale in Portugal later this month in what its
manufacturer said will be a world first.
The water called "Formas Luso" comes in lemon, strawberry and mango flavour
and it contains soluble fibers which help stave off hunger pangs, Portugal's
second-largest brewery, Central de Cervejas e Bebidas, said in a statement
Wednesday.
It will hit store shelves in Portugal on April 28 and the company, owned by
British group Scottish and Newcastle, hopes to export the new product soon to
the United States and Canada.
The brewery said it expects to sell 4.7 million litres of the water worth
seven million euros (8.6 million dollars) by the end of the year.
It invested 4.5 million euros to develop the water and has set aside six
million euros to promote it.
The company said it wanted "to create an absolutely innovative product in the
water segment which brings with it a relevant benefit for people in Portugal
where nearly half the population is overweight".
Central de Cervejas has a 40 percent share of the Portuguese beer market,
mostly through sales of its Sagres family of beers. It also sells soft drinks
and the popular Luso brand of plain bottled water.
