Designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site with over 2000 years of living history, Bath is Britain's leading Spa town.
Situated on the banks of River Avon and the picturesque Kennet & Avon Canal, water has always played a unique role in Bath's history and geography. The surrounding area, North East Somerset, in the West of England, is steeped in history.
Unique to the UK, the natural hot springs of Bath form the backdrop to the fascinating story of goddesses, temples and Aquae Sulis, as Bath was known by the Romans - all brought to life in the world famous Roman Baths museum. Above the Museum you can taste the waters, take a meal and enjoy the music in the 18th century Pump Room.
Visitors to Bath can also enjoy some of the finest architectural sights in Europe, including such masterpieces as the Royal Crescent, Bath Abbey, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge. The city has an inspiring collection of museums and galleries including such gems as the Museum of Costume, Holburne Museum, American Museum, No 1. Royal Crescent and the Museum of East Asian Art. New to Bath is the Jane Austen Centre, celebrating the life and times of this famous writer. The oldest house in Bath is home to the famous Sally Lunn bun which is still made to the original secret recipe.
Yet Bath is not buried in the past! Festivals, theatre and vibrant street entertainment bring life and excitement to this beautiful city. Award-winning parks, gardens and floral displays make Bath a colourful city, too.
Bath is also a celebrated shopping centre, with a reputation that goes back to Georgian times. Set within a compact and accessible city centre Bath's range of specialist and well known stores leaves shoppers spoilt for choice. The city also has a fine choice of quality restaurants, pubs and tea shops to suit all appetites.
To make the most of Bath, there are guided walking tours, open top bus tours and even balloon flights for a unique view. River and canal trips are also a great way to explore the area, while the waterside is a picturesque setting for walking, cycling, or fishing.
Most exciting of all Bath will soon be re-connected with its rich Spa heritage in Spring 2003. It is, however, not resting on its considerable laurels. In February 2003, a state-of-the-art spa facility will open in the heart of the City, offering bathing, water therapy and a range of specialist treatments using water from the three natural hot springs. It is sure to become one of Bath's great experiences.
