Unique and historic Droitwich Spa is located in north
Worcestershire and surrounded by beautiful countryside. It is a town of great
charm and character, offering its visitors plenty to see and enjoy.
A very special place - exceptional among the
Spa towns of Britain, the ancient and historic town of Droitwich has a rich
source of natural brine and achieved fame and recognition as a Brine Spa. The
town is built above large deposits of rock salt, formed millions of years ago
and salt has shaped the town's history since Roman times.
Today, right
in the centre of Droitwich, you can enjoy a unique Spa experience in the Brine
Baths Complex, opened by The Hon. Earl and Countess Spencer, then Patrons of The
British Spas Federation, in November 1985.
Visitors to the town do not
drink the waters at Droitwich, but can enjoy an incomparable bathing experience
with the therapeutic and remedial benefits of the unique warm Brine waters.
Imagine the pleasure of floating, perfectly relaxed in a warm pool of
natural salt water; no intrusions, no pressures, simply weightlessness and
warmth. There are many healthy benefits too!
The Droitwich brine is
pumped up from an underground lake 200 feet below the town, and is so strong
that each gallon gives two and a half pounds of salt - ten times stronger than
sea water and only rivalled by the Dead Sea - there's nothing else like it in
Europe!
The natural salt springs (brine) meant that the brine could easily
be collected to produce good quality salt - John Corbett, known as "the salt
king", was the man responsible for developing the salt industry. He built new
salt works and introduced innovative production methods. He improved the working
environment of his labourers, built new houses and also adorned the town with
distinctive Victorian buildings.
Corbett purchased the "Royal Brine
Baths" and a nearby hotel to form one purpose-built spa complex; brine bathers
flocked to Droitwich and the town prospered. Today the visible legacy of this
great Victorian benefactor are the Chateau Impney and The Raven which are among
the quality accommodation the town and its surrounding area has to offer.
Visit this fascinating town and, to make the most of it, your first call
should be the Town's Heritage Centre where you can explore the fascinating
history and also enjoy an excellent exhibition of a special era of radio
broadcasting - "Radio Droitwich",
Droitwich Spa also boasts one of the
country's earliest canal reaches, and in the near future the restored Brindley
Barge Canal will provide boaters with the only "weekend ring" in the country.
Enjoy the special atmosphere that only a true Spa town with a rich
heritage can offer.
