Set in a spectacular gorge in the beautiful
Derbyshire Dales, Matlock Bath is a popular inland Spa resort with naturally
occurring thermal springs.
Matlock Bath owes its origins to the baths constructed to take
advantage of these springs and present day visitors can still "take the waters"
from an ornate Victorian pump and bathe in the natural spring water Spa pools of
the New Bath Hotel.
During the 17th century, visitors to the Matlock
area sought cures from the springs, and by the 18th century Matlock Bath was a
fashionable Spa, patronised by those seeking tranquillity and appreciating
natural settings.
Princess Victoria's royal visit in 1831 confirmed
Matlock as a society venue of the time. Ruskin loved it, and Lord Byron
confirmed its romantic character, comparing it with alpine Switzerland, hence
its nickname "Little Switzerland" and, today, there is even a cable car ride.
It is easy to imagine the Victorians strolling along the Promenade,
walking along the Lovers' Walk or through the colourful Derwent Gardens.
The famous annual Matlock Bath Illuminations and Venetian Nights
originated in Victorian times, when the residents illuminated the area with
fairy lamps, followed by a procession of illuminated boats on the river, to
celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.
Today these are a popular feature from late August through to the
end of October. The river banks are decorated and the surrounding cliffs
floodlit to create a fairyland scene of colour and movement with illuminated
boats at weekends and occasional firework displays.
The ancient
tradition of "Well Dressings", can also be seen throughout the area between May
and September, some villages dressing as many as six different wells!
The technique of Well Dressing is a highly specialised craft, using
natural materials. The Well Dressings are made up into a tableau which is then
erected over the well and a blessing ceremony follows.
Visitors to the
area are amazed by the range of attractions in the Derbyshire Dales and Matlock
Bath.
