Yotei Mountain Spout Water

by Takuya Horiuchi

With its altitude of 1,898m, "Yotei Mountain" is also called "Ezo-Fuji" or Mt. Fuji of Hokkaido. Melt snow and fallen rains are filtered through underground layers for long time and vast jet shoots out at mountain foot.

The mountain has a number of spring water spots, the hugest of which is located at northeast mountain foot in Kyogoku town, known as Yotei no Fukidashi-Yusui or Yotei Mountain's spout water. Made of lava beds, Yotei Mountain does not produce torrents on its surface but fallen water infiltrates the ground and jets out at mountain foot. Daily volume of spout water amounts 80 thousand tons, and the water temperature is naturally kept at 10 degrees C. throughout the year.

Logs are set up from a large rock whereby the water originates its flows, and visitors can take the water for drinking it at home. The fact that we saw more local residents at the scene than visitors implied the true quality of this water.

Location: Kyogoku-cho, Abuta-gun, Hokkaido

Transportation: Take Donan Bus for Date Monbetsu / Kimobetsu from JR "Kuchian" station on Hakodate Honsen Line, get off at "Kyogoku Nokyo Mae" stop, and 10~15 minutes walk

Contact: Kyogoku-cho town office Planning / Promotion section 81-(0)136-42-2111
