Win a Free Dinner on Evian

Get a Coupon for a Free Bottle of Evian Water

In doing some background research on the Internet, I bumped into the rules for the "Dinner on Evian" drawing and discovered there's still time to enter (submissions close December 31, 2004).

There are two more drawings - November 2nd and December 3rd, 2004 - at which 11 winners will be randomly selected at each of the remaining drawings. The prize is a $100 American Express Gift Cheque, accepted at the list of 11 participating restaurants. (But I would assume that the American Express Gift Cheque is good anywhere it's accepted.)

To sign up, go to the Evian home page, and click on "Dinner on Evian." Just by entering you will receive a coupon card for a free bottle of Evian at any of the 11 participating restaurants. If you win, send me an e-mail and tell me about your dining experience and fine water pairing: margaret@finewaters.com.

Beacon, Los Angeles

A Nice Casual Dinner

My wife Erika and I had a nice casual dinner at Beacon in Culver City, California. The owners Vicki and Kazuto Matsusaka call it an Asian Cafe. The food reminds me of Matsuhisa (Los Angeles), and the space is uncluttered but noisy.

Chef Kazuto is a Spago/Puck alumnus and served as the longtime chef at Puck's Chinois on Main in Santa Monica before opening Beacon. Ducale (Italy) still or sparkling waters were the only choices on the menu for the bottled water connoisseur. We ordered Ducale Sparkling ($ 5.50) and it arrived way too cold - the bottle actually had condensation. We had to let it sit for a while before we could enjoy it.

We use the FineWaters Balance rating system in selecting and pairing food and water. Ducale sparkling is rated FineWaters Balance Effervescent, but we would have preferred a FineWaters Balance Classic, maybe Appollinaris (USA- Imported) with bubbles to match the amazing Kaki Fry (crisp oysters in a lettuce cup with yuzu-tartar sauce).
