In the spring of 1999, the Muhr family set out on a quest to find the perfect drinking water. An extensive search and research led them to the region of Hallstatt/Salzkammergut in the Austrian Alps. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is home to spectacular caves and unspoiled land owned and protected by the Austrian National Forest Service.
It was at the foot of the famous Dachstein Glacier that they finally discovered a deep artesian well (214m /700ft) formed during the Triassic times of pure limestone, where snow and rain filter naturally into the aquifer at a cold 5.6°C (41°F) after an 8-year journey through the glacial moraine. The effectiveness of this natural filtration process is evident in Hallstein's virginality and low minerality, which contribute to its clean, crisp taste.
The family has done everything necessary to protect the quality and unique characteristics of this rare and precious water, whilst keeping the source's aquaculture sustainable for generations to come. Hallstein is bottled directly at the source using a process that does not require any pumping beyond the natural artesian pressure. There is also no need for any treatment or filtration of the water at bottling due to its extremely low Total Organic Carbon (0.09 mg/l) and its natural purity. Hallstein has a desirable 2:1 Calcium to Magnesium ratio for optimum body absorption, and a high level of Dissolved Oxygen (11 mg/l) gives the water a fresh taste.
Now, 20 years since their journey began, the family offers Hallstein on a limited subscription only to a small but discerning client base worldwide.
