The Republic of Macedonia roughly corresponds to the ancient kingdom of Paeonia which was located immediately north of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia. The Romans established the Province of Macedonia in 146 BC.
Macedonia is a landlocked country that is geographically clearly defined by a central valley formed by the Vardar river and framed along its borders by mountain ranges. The terrain is mostly rugged, located between the Šar Mountains and Osogovo, which frame the valley of the Vardar river. It has over fifty lakes, and sixteen mountains higher than 2,000 m (6,562 ft).
